Michele Filgate

Michele Filgate is a writer and the editor of the acclaimed essay collection, What My Mother and I Don’t Talk About: Fifteen Writers Break the Silence (Simon & Schuster, April 2019), which grew out of Filgate’s widely read Longreads essay on her troubled relationship with her mother. Her next anthology, What My Father and I Don’t Talk About, will be published in 2025.

Writers spend many years unraveling their childhoods, and some of the most powerful essays and memoirs of recent years have examined the complexities of the parent/offspring relationship. In this class, students will read a wide variety of nonfiction and fiction addressing this topic, and learn techniques for writing about this subject in a nuanced and kaleidoscopic way. Through close reading as well as writing exercises, we will focus on how when we are writing about our parents, we're also writing about ourselves.

Workshop Highlights:

  • Students will read a wide variety of nonfiction and fiction addressing this topic

  • Students will learn techniques for writing about this subject in a nuanced and kaleidoscopic way

  • Students will participate in guided writing exercises.
